Charge Nurse

Franciscan Healthcare is looking for Charge Nurse's to oversee daily nursing operations across Obstetrics (OB), Medical-Surgical (Med-Surg), and Emergency Room (ER) departments, ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care, and serving as a leader and resource for the nursing staff. This role includes supervising, coordinating, and supporting nursing staff while maintaining compliance with healthcare regulations and facility policies during each assigned shift.

Status: Non-exempt, 12 hour shifts to include days, evenings, weekend, and holiday rotation. 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Patient Care Management:
    • Oversee and coordinate patient care in OB, Med-Surg, and ER to ensure the highest quality and safety standards.
    • Monitor patient conditions and assist nursing staff to deliver high level of patient care. 
    • Serve as an advocate for patient needs, ensuring effective communication with medical staff and families.
    • Ensure specialized care protocols are followed in each department.
  2. Staff Supervision & Leadership:
    • Assign nursing staff to appropriate patient care duties based on skill level and patient needs across OB, Med-Surg, and ER.
    • Provide guidance, training, and support to nursing staff to ensure efficient workflow and adherence to best practices.
    • Provide feedback and address any staff concerns or conflicts.
    • Promotes a positive work environment and is a positive role model for co-workers, students and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  3. Operational Oversight:
    • Ensure proper staffing levels by managing schedules, shift assignments, and call-ins for OB, Med-Surg, and ER.
    • Maintain an organized and efficient workflow to support patient safety and satisfaction. Point person for shift.
    • Monitor and enforce compliance with infection control protocols and other safety measures.
  4. Communication & Collaboration:
    • Act as a liaison between nurses, patients, and leadership across all departments.
    • Facilitate shift huddles and handovers, ensuring accurate documentation and communication.
    • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to enhance patient care outcomes.
  5. Compliance & Quality Assurance:
    • Ensure adherence to all facility policies, procedures, and healthcare regulations.
    • Participate in audits, quality improvement initiatives, and staff training to maintain accreditation and compliance standards.
    • Address and document any incidents or concerns related to patient care or staff performance.
  6. Emergency Response & Problem Solving:
    • Lead the response to medical emergencies, ensuring prompt and appropriate action is taken in OB, Med-Surg, and ER settings.
    • Troubleshoot any operational or patient care challenges and implement effective solutions.
    • Maintain composure under pressure and provide crisis management support when needed.
  7. Administrative Duties:
    • Oversee and document patient records, treatment plans, and staff reports accurately.
    • Assist in budgeting, resource allocation, and strategic planning for nursing operations.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN preferred).
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of nursing experience.
  • Competent in OB, Med-Surg, and ER nursing required.
  • Must maintain high level of performance in clinical and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication, positive teamwork, and organizational abilities.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) systems and basic computer skills.
