A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is caused by an injury (bump, blow, or jolt) to the head that interrupts the normal function of the brain. TBI severity can range from mild to severe which may include loss of consciousness. The three leading causes of TBI are falls, being struck by an object, and motor vehicle crashes.
Andrew Brockmann is a 19-year-old living in West Point. He was involved in a motor vehicle accident on June 19, 2016. This resulted in a severe TBI for which Andrew has now been seeking physical, occupational, and speech therapy services. We sat down with Andrew to get his thoughts on TBI awareness and education, as well as his therapy here at Wimmer Rehabilitation.
What made you choose Wimmer Rehab for your therapy?
I wanted to get back home. It was important to me to get back to my high school classes and finish my senior year.
What are your goals for therapy?
My goals are to be stronger and be more active. I wanted to return to golfing and driving. I just wanted to become as close to my normal self as possible.
What is your greatest accomplishment?
I became healthy, stronger, regained function. I don’t use a cane or walker anymore. In regard to independence, I am back to driving.
Did you have any failures in therapy?
My jumping and running are not as good as I was hoping. At first, my speech was difficult to understand, but my R’s, S’s, and T’s are much better.
How has your TBI impacted your family?
My mom didn’t teach for almost 6 months, as she was helping me and driving me everywhere. My parents became more protective of me and I think my siblings are nicer now.
What advice would you give to others going through the therapy process?
I would tell them to stay positive because you will get better. Keep your hopes up and trust your therapists. You have to listen to them if you want to improve.
Andrew would like you to know that March is his birthday month, but we would also like you to know that March is Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Month!
