Custom Splint Fabrication and Modification
Occupational therapists at Franciscan Healthcare are trained in custom splint fabrication. The purpose of a splint is to protect and heal structures of the elbow, wrist, hand, or digit, and to decrease pain during functional activity.
Advantages of custom fabricated orthotics are:
- Removable for wound care, bathing, or gentle exercise if appropriate
- Easily adjusted if uncomfortable
- Any position requested can be achieved with the moldable material
- Able to clean as needed
- Can get wet
- Adjustable as swelling decreases
- Adjustable as range of motion improves
