Driving Assessments and Driving Retraining
Community mobility is an important part of a person’s quality of life and independence. Changes in physical, mental, and sensory abilities may create challenges for many individuals and may hamper their ability to drive safely. Our occupational therapists have the knowledge needed to recognize the impact of medical conditions and the aging process on driving performance. They can determine if driving is appropriate and safe. If so, they then can provide you with the most advanced training and vehicle modifications available today so that you can drive safely tomorrow.
Who can benefit? Individuals who have suffered from one of the following:
- Neurological impairments (Brain Injury, Stroke, Parkinson’s, MS)
- Orthopedic Impairments
- Amputations
- Spinal Cord Injury
- Memory Deficits
- Onset of Dementia
- Vision Impairments
- Age-related changes
Our program begins with a clinical evaluation. This is followed by a variety of recommendations to include driver retraining sessions and/or vehicle modifications. We will discuss other resources for transportation if driving is no longer recommended.
Currently, a behind-the-wheel evaluation is not offered at Franciscan Healthcare. Our therapists, however, can assist in finding appropriate resources should the clinical portion of the assessment warrant a behind-the-wheel evaluation.
