Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread chronic pain, fatigue, diffuse tenderness, and a variety of other symptoms including:
• Sleep disturbances
• Morning stiffness
• Restless legs syndrome
• Numbness or tingling of the extremities
• Headaches
• Cognitive and memory problems (sometimes referred to as “fibro fog”)
• Sensitivity to loud noises, bright light, and/or temperature
• Irritable bowel syndrome
• Painful menstrual periods

While there is currently no definitive cure for fibromyalgia, physical therapy is one treatment option. The physical therapist aims for a team approach, remaining in close communication with you and your doctor, throughout treatment. Your physical therapist will serve as a resource to help you better understand your condition, as well as assist in symptom management, facilitate your ability to carry on daily activities, and improve your overall function and quality of life.

At Franciscan Healthcare, our physical therapists take an evidence-based approach while working with our patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia. We follow up-to-date research which supports the use of education, aerobic exercise, and strengthening exercise. We strive to increase our patient’s knowledge and confidence in managing their symptoms while guiding them and encouraging them in a customized exercise program. Your exercise program may include aerobic conditioning, aquatic exercise, stretching, and/or strengthening exercises with goals to improve function and general health. We are here to ensure your success outside of our rehabilitation clinic!
